第6艦隊主要在地中海區域活動，被稱為現代地中海憲兵。其前身為美海軍駐地中海的幾支小分隊，1950年起正式稱做第6艦隊。

第6艦隊—地中海的警察。第6艦隊隸屬於歐洲美海軍司令部的主要作戰部隊，主要活動海區為地中海和黑海，司令部設在意大利的加埃塔，擁有第2航母大隊。前身為美海軍駐地中海的幾支小分隊，1948年改組為第6特混艦隊，1950年改稱第6艦隊。
自從組建以來，第6艦隊參加過地中海的多次危機反應行動，執行過多次重大任務。如：1958年美軍入侵黎巴嫩，1986年實施「草原烈火」行動空襲利比亞，1991年海灣戰爭，1999年科索沃戰爭。主要任務是：實施海戰，確保地中海和黑海範圍內的制海權與制空權；在地中海沿岸實施兩棲登陸作戰；重點防守和封鎖海區內的主要通道。其兵力由大西洋艦隊調動，作戰受美駐歐洲海軍司令部指揮。旗艦為「拉薩爾」號雜務指揮艦，母港設在地中海地區，一些艦隻都以美國東海岸為母港。多數艦隻與大西洋的第2艦隊進行輪換。
該艦隊一般擁有20至少30艘艦船，約1萬人兵力。
