無論是總統就職典禮，還是阿靈頓國家公墓，抑或是戰火紛飛的伊拉克戰場，我們總會看到這樣一支熟悉的隊伍——他們有時穿著美國陸軍傳統的藍色禮服，端著配上刺刀的M14步槍走著整齊的隊列。有時會穿上美國陸軍現役ACU作戰服端著M4卡賓槍身陷美國反恐戰爭一線。今天，就讓我們一起來走進這支上鏡率極高，但又不為廣大中國軍迷所瞭解的團隊——美國陸軍第三步兵團。
美國陸軍第三步兵團，被廣大美國群眾暱稱為old guard（老衛隊），該團隸屬於華盛頓軍區（常服上的部隊臂章為華盛頓軍區），成立於1784年，是美國成立最早並至今仍在服役的步兵單位之一。團座右銘為Noli Me Tangere (來自拉丁語，即Don't Touch Me 別碰我)。
步兵三團做為一支陸軍步兵團，曾參與過美英1812（1812-1815）年戰爭、墨西哥戰爭、美國內戰、印第安戰爭、美西戰爭、美菲戰爭、二次世界大戰、越南戰爭及伊拉克戰爭，可謂是一支久經沙場，功勛卓著的團隊，獲得過多次功勛單位表彰和勇敢集體表彰，同時有4名該團士兵曾獲得過美國最高級別勛章——榮譽勛章（Medal of honor）。為表彰其在美西戰爭中塞羅戈多戰役的英勇功績，經國會立法通過，該團是美國所有武裝力量中唯一可以在行軍中可以裝上刺刀的單位，也是美國陸軍中唯一仍配備有M-14步槍的作戰單位。
時至今日，該團所擔負的主要任務是保衛美國總統，紀念已故同袍，同時也代表著美國陸軍的榮譽，執行美國陸軍儀仗隊任務。除此之外，他們也負責接待外賓時擔任儀仗隊、阿靈頓國家公墓的衛兵、歡送退伍軍官、士官兵，在執勤時，該團官兵一般穿著陸軍藍色禮服。下面著重介紹這支步兵團的幾支特殊單位：
1、Marching platoons:負責遊行及儀仗事務
2、The Continental Color Guard:負責在重大慶典中重現華盛頓時期的美軍旗隊,穿著大陸軍時期軍服。
3、the Presidential Salute Battery:也就是禮炮隊，執行重大場合，如慶典、外國國家元首到訪時的禮炮任務。
4、Caisson Platoon:負責軍葬及國葬（美國四處征戰，陣亡軍人無數，這個應該是最忙的單位了）
5、US Army Drill Team:陸軍拋槍表演隊（每年5月至7月每週三晚上在華盛頓地區都有表演）
6、團裡不同時期的幾位帥哥軍官，出鏡率頗高，擔任隊列指揮官及陪同領導檢閱部隊的檢閱官，軍銜一般為上校。
